Top rated featherweight contender Monty Meza-Clay scored a sensational first round stoppage win over Omar Lizarraga on Friday night in front of his hometown fans at the ExpoMart just outside of Pittsburgh, Pa.

With the win, Meza-Clay kept on track for a shot at WBO featherweight titlist Steven Luevano, who is scheduled to defend his title next on June 28 against Mario Santiago.

This was his second consecutive impressive outing in front of a national audience, Earlier this year, the 5’2 Meza-Clay (28-1, 19KOs) scorched former IBF featherweight titlist Erik Aiken, stopping him in the seventh round on ESPN2.

But in this fight against Lizarraga, even though it last only one second past the halfway mark of the first round, Meza-Clay may have paid a steep price. There are reports coming out of Pittsburgh that Meza-Clay may have suffered a broken right wrist during the bout.

“It is not true that it is broke,” promoter Chris Riskus told me on Monday. “He hurt his wrist, but nothing has been confirmed whether it is broke or not. We should know more later this week.”

“Monty came into this fight determined to put on a great performance as he always does, especially in front of his hometown fans of Pittsburgh. Monty is waiting for a chance to fulfill his dream of winning a world title and that could potentially happen in his hometown. He has a great relationship with the fight fans of Pittsburgh and the fans respect Monty for what he has accomplished.”
