The Ford Center at The Star, Frisco, Texas - In a welterweight battle, four division world champion Mikey Garcia (40-1, 30 KOs) secured a hard-fought twelve round unanimous decision over two division champion Jessie Vargas (29-3-2, 11 KOs). The scores were 114-113, 116-111 and 116-111.

Garcia has been out of the ring since losing a one-sided decision to IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence in March 2019.

“I feel very happy to be back and excited to be here. I had to make adjustments to his reach and natural size. As the fight went on I started to hurt him, closing the gap, finding my rhythm, and timing. In the end it worked out very well," Garcia said.

Vargas was jabbing heavy in the first round. Vargas landed a few good counters, while Garcia was warming up. Vargas was very sharp in the second with his jab and hooks. Garcia had moments during the third, with Vargas still landing a stiff jab and more of the counters.

Vargas was landing that jab often in the fifth, but then he was rocked by a solid hook and dropped a moment later. In the sixth, Vargas came out looking to get back in the sixth, but he was being rattled by Garcia's bigger shots. Vargas was boxing well in the seventh for most of the round. At the end, he was once again rocked and hurt bad, nearly going down as Garcia was unloading with shots.

“I carried the weight a little better. I felt better. I had my feet when I had to. He’s a big man. I could feel the size difference, but my talent overcame that. I started to hurt him as the rounds went by. I landed a right hand where he went down. I hurt him again and got my rhythm, speed and power. It was perfect and did it against a bigger guy," Garcia said.

Vargas' eyes were swelling up at the start of the eight. Vargas was jabbing, with Garcia landing the bigger punches. Garcia's bigger shots continued to control things in the ninth, as Vargas was still in there and working hard.

In the tenth, Vargas was stunned once again. He was able to battle through it. Vargas was able to do a lot better in the eleventh round, as he connected with his jab and landed good right hands. Vargas closed stronger as he was smothering Garcia and fighting in close during the twelfth.

“I think I’m ready to get back in with the best. I want Manny Pacquiao or a rematch with Errol Spence. I’m better at this weight class. This is a great option to continue at 147," Garcia said.
