OMAHA - Following Muwendo’s win, women’s junior lightweight prospect Mikaela Mayer remained unbeaten by out-boxing Vanessa Bradford in a one-sided eight-rounder.

Los Angeles’ Mayer (8-0, 4 KOs), a 2016 Olympian, floored Bradford in the seventh round and defeated her shorter, slower opponent by the identical score of 80-71 on all three cards. The 34-year-old Bradford, of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, lost for the first time as a pro (4-1-2).

An aggressive Mayer kept Bradford fighting off her back foot throughout the first four rounds. Mayer clearly won each of those four rounds, but didn’t appear to hurt her opponent until the fifth round.

Mayer landed an overhand right early in the fifth that made Bradford move away from her. A right uppercut by Mayer also knocked Bradford off balance later in the fifth.

Mayer finally floored Bradford with an overhand right early in the seventh round. Bradford reached her feet and kept out of Mayer’s punching range well enough to make it to the end of that round.

Mayer pressed for the knockout throughout the eighth round. She couldn’t hurt Bradford again, though, and settled for an easy victory on the cards.

In the third bout Saturday night, Ugandan junior lightweight Ismail Muwendo defeated Andre Wilson by unanimous decision in a six-rounder. Muwendo won by the same score, 59-55, on each of the three cards.

Muwendo, 30, upped his record to 20-1 and won his first fight since losing an eight-round unanimous decision to John Moralde on May 26. Wilson (15-12-1, 11 KOs), of St. Joseph, Missouri, is 2-7 in his past nine fights.

Wilson was losing badly before he drilled Muwendo with a straight left hand in the third round that made Muwendo stumble backward. Muwendo recovered and made the remainder of that round competitive.

Muwendo hurt Wilson with a straight right hand early in the second round and when he landed a hard left to the body late in the second.

After Wilson hurt him in the third round, Muwendo regained control of their fight and won the remaining rounds convincingly.
