Former world title challenger Miguel Flores (25-4, 12 KOs) escaped an embarrassing hometown upset, eking out a razor-close eight-round split decision against journeyman Diuhl Olguin (15-18-4, 10 KOs) from Mexico at the Toyota Center, The fight was on the undercard of the Jermall Charlo-Juan Macias Montiel middleweight title fight.

Flores found success in the early rounds by zeroing in on the body. Digging hooks to Olguin's ribcage with both hands, he repeatedly forced Olguin to back off and reset. But Flores inexplicably abandoned the body attack began headhunting in the third which allowed Olguin to gain the upperhand.

Feisty and aggressive, Olguin took the fight to Flores in the middle rounds. Alternating between orthodox and southpaw, Olguin pressed forward relentless and hammered in chopping shots that repeatedly penetrated Flores' guard and jolted his head back. Flores fired off straight punches and combinations but most were half and inch short and half a second late. Flores suffered a cut above his left eye in the fourth round.

In the last two rounds, Flores finally managed to find a modicum of rhythm and timing to keep Olguin at bay and regain control of the fight. Utilizing his longer reach he used one-twos to set up left hooks to the body, although not as frequently or effectively as he had in the opening frames. Olguin doggedly continued to apply pressure but it was Flores who got the better of the exchanges by landing the first and last shots of the exchanges.

The sores were 77-75 twice for Flores and 77-75 for Olguin. Boxingscene.com scored the fight a 76-76 draw at four rounds apiece.

“It was a horrible performance," Flores said. "Some things went on in camp, but no excuses. He’s a tough guy. It was obviously a horrible performance. You know, a win today, look good tomorrow. And that’s how I’m taking it. But obviously very disgusted by my performance."
