Former four division champion Miguel Cotto, through his promotional company Promociones Miguel Cotto, is on track to be the first to stage a boxing card in Puerto Rico since the forced closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic that erupted in March.

According to Víctor “Luvi” Calleja, president of the Puerto Rico Boxing Commission, Cotto's company has placed a hold on Saturday, August 22, to carry out an event at the Pedrín Zorilla Coliseite in San Juan with 50 percent capacity of spectators in the stands.

Brian Pérez, executive director of Miguel Cotto Promotions, confirmed to El Nuevo Dia the information given by Calleja and added that the evening will involve five to six fights and will feature the reappearances of young boxers Oscar Collazo and Danielito Zorrilla.

"We are waiting for the new executive order from the governor (Wanda Vázquez Garced) to make the official announcement. We gave the suggestion that it be a limit of five to six fights. We want to have a great event and make it clear that boxing is back,” said Pérez to Jorge Loza.

Calleja, for his part, stated that the draft health protocol of the Commission to reactivate boxing, also evaluated by the executive director Gerardo Mora, was presented to the secretary of the Department of Recreation and Sports (DRD), Adriana Sánchez Parés.

Cotto's company had their last boxing card in Puerto Rico on February 15 at the Pedrín Zorilla, an event that featured a victory for Oscar Collazo, gold medalist of the Lima 2019 Pan American Games, in his professional debut. Zorrilla (13-0, 10 knockouts), meanwhile, has not seen action since last October 5.

The last card presented in Puerto Rico before COVID-19 put things to a stop, was on February 28 presented by PR Best Boxing at the Rubén Zayas Montañez Coliseum in Trujillo Alto.
