Miguel "El Alacran" Berchelt (38-2) was very confident going into his showdown against unbeaten former featherweight champion Oscar Valdez.  The Mexican warriors collided Saturday night inside of "The Bubble" at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada in a highly anticipated ESPN main event.

Berchelt was attempting his 7th defense of his WBC super featherweight title and opened as a 4-1 favorite against Valdez, who previously held the WBO featherweight belt.

Valdez started off strong and Berchelt never really found his groove as Valdez's footwork and offensive variation kept the Quintana Roo native off balance from the opening bell.

Valdez dropped Berchelt in the 4th and again in the 9th round but Berchelt valiantly rose to his feet both times and was able to recover his wits and finish both rounds.  However that wasn't the case in the 10th round when Valdez floored Berchelt with a face first knockdown.

The 29-year-old Berchelt laid on his back for several minutes before rising to his feet.  He ended up getting a clean bill of health from a local hospital later on in the evening per BoxingScene.com's Jake Donovan.

Berchelt is obviously upset with the result of the highest profile fight of his career but vows to come back better than ever after he takes a much needed break from the sport.

"I want to let everyone know that I am fine.  It just wasn't my night.  Without a doubt it hurts my soul but this is how it goes, you either win or you lose.  This isn't the first time that I have fallen and I am sure that I will return stronger.  Thanks to everyone who cared about my well being," Berchelt stated.

The loss snapped a 17 fight win streak for Berchelt.  Included in that run are victories over former champions  Francisco Vargas (twice), Takashi Miura, and Jason Sosa. His previous loss was in 2014 when he was caught cold and stopped in the 1st round by Luis Eduardo Flores in Mexico.
