Mickel Spencer didn’t get the knockout Saturday that it looked like the unbeaten junior welterweight prospect would produce.

The 19-year-old Spencer’s four-round fight against Lyle McFarlane was ruled a no-contest due to a cut McFarlane suffered around his left eye just before the midway mark of the third round at The Armory in Minneapolis. Referee Mark Nelson stopped their bout on the advice of a Minnesota Office of Combative Sports ringside physician.

Spencer (3-0, 2 KOs, 1 NC), of Linden, Michigan, was clearly winning, but their fight was ruled a no-contest because an accidental clash of heads caused McFarlane’s prohibitive cut. Tulsa’s McFarlane (2-1, 1 KO, 1 NC) seemed like he wanted to continue, but Nelson was obligated to follow the ringside physician’s advice.

Showtime streamed the Spencer-McFarlane match on its YouTube channel as part of the Carlos Adames-Julian Williams undercard.

The taller, rangier Spencer again controlled the action and landed the harder punches in the first half of the third round.

Nelson noticed the cut around McFarlane’s left eye and called for time with 1:29 to go in the third round. Nelson waved an end to the bout a few seconds later because a ringside physician didn’t think McFarlane should continue.

Spencer drilled McFarlane with a right uppercut just before the second round ended. A left hook by Spencer rocked McFarlane with just over a minute to go in the second round.

Spencer buzzed McFarlane with a right uppercut when there was just over 1:10 to go in the first round. Spencer then landed a right hand and a left hook, but McFarlane managed to recover and made it to the end of the first round.
