LAS VEGAS – Michell Banquez made Michael Angeletti work throughout the longest fight of Angeletti’s pro career Saturday.

The 26-year-old Angeletti, a bantamweight prospect from New Orleans, ultimately landed enough flush punches to drop and stop the stubborn Banquez in the eighth and final round on the Rolando Romero-Ismael Barroso undercard at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Banquez remained on his feet when referee Chris Flores stopped their fight at 1:15 of the eighth round.

Angeletti (8-0, 7 KOs) was winning decisively, but the brave Banquez came forward and threw punches until he got hurt in the eighth round. Venezuela’s Banquez (20-4, 14 KOs) lost a second straight bout by technical knockout.

A left hook by Angeletti briefly sent Banquez to one knee 30 seconds into the eighth round. He got up quickly, but Angeletti swarmed him and landed enough unanswered punches to force Flores to halt the action.

After a competitive sixth round, Angeletti landed two hard left hooks to Banquez’s body just before the midway mark of the seventh round. Several seconds later, Angeletti drilled Banquez with a left hook to his head.

Angeletti appeared to hurt with a right to Banquez’s body and then a left to his body in the final minute of the fifth round. Banquez threw mostly wide punches at Angeletti in the first minute of the fifth round, but he was the busier fighter.

Banquez’s right hand backed up Angeletti with just under 55 seconds to go in the fourth round.

Angeletti landed a left hook 1:10 into the third round, but Banquez pressed forward. Angeletti’s left hook knocked Banquez off balance 40 seconds into the third round.

Angeletti countered Banquez with a right hand that landed with about 15 seconds remaining in the second round. Angeletti drilled Banquez with a straight right hand just before the halfway point of the second round.
