LITTLE ROCK, ARK. — Town of Tonawanda heavyweight Baby Joe Mesi remained undefeated in his professional career with a second-round technical knockout of Dennis “Mad Dog” Matthews late Saturday night at the Pope County Fairgrounds in Little Rock, Ark.

Mesi landed several clean, solid punches in the bout, particularly in the second round, prompting Matthews’ corner to call the fight at the 2:30 mark of the second. There were no knock downs in the fight.

Mesi, 32, came into the fight weighing 232 pounds, according to his father and manager, Jack. That’s five pounds lighter than his last fight, when he defeated Stephane Tessier on June 23 in Montreal by unanimous decision.

This was Mesi’s first fight in the continental United States since he suffered bleeding on the brain following a fight with Vassiliy Jirov in 2004. The Nevada State Athletic Commission suspended Mesi following that fight because of the injury, precluding Mesi from fighting anywhere in the U.S.

Mesi has fought three times since that suspension was lifted, scoring a TKO over Ron Bellamy on April 1 in Puerto Rico, the decision win over Tessier and Saturday’s result.

With the win, Mesi improves to 32-0 with 25 knockouts. Matthews, a Houston native, fell to 9-28 with the loss.
