Strength and conditioning coach Angel “Memo” Heredia wants reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight champion John Riel Casimero to have more explosive punches than he displayed in his big world title win over Zolani Tete last year.

Casimero was scheduled to unify with International Boxing Federation (IBF) and World Boxing Association bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue in April in Las Vegas - but the fight was pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic.

There is no word on whether or not that contest will still take place in 2020.

Heredia has already worked in one camp with Casimero (29-4, 2- KOs) and believes the boxer is improving.

Casimero has been out of the ring since knocking out Tete back in November in Birmingham.

If Top Rank presents them with a new date for the Inoue fight, Heredia is going make sure Casimero is improved in the areas of speed, power and stamina.

"It’s going to be our second camp together; so, every camp it’s like you go to school. You go in your first grade, then second grade. You become better and better,” Heredia told The Manila Times.

“He needs to be, obviously, in his best condition ever. He needs to be strong and fast. He needs to be explosive, and not only in the first round but also for the entire 12 rounds. So, hopefully, we will be in a very good shape — probably much better [than] when it was against [Zolani] Tete. Every time you hit, you will be affected. And if you’re not in condition, you’ll be wasted. So, I want to sustain his mobility and [muscle] reaction [for a] longer time.

Casimero is in very good physical condition right now, which Heredia says is good news because it gives them plenty of time to sharpen things up for a return date in the near future.

“He could be 100 percent now, but there is no need to do that [yet] because we still have plenty of time,” Heredia explained. “We’re not ready to peak yet. We don’t want to impress early on and overtrain our athlete ever; we just want to [maintain] everything.

“He is good — as in, in a good position, you know. He is in progress at 60 percent. And we don’t want to push it since we have plenty of time. Once we get into the ballroom, we’ll be ready."
