Shane McGuigan, the former head trainer of unified junior welterweight champion Josh Taylor, says his former boxer needs to rematch Jack Catterall.

Back in February, Taylor won a controversial twelve round split decision over Catterall.

Taylor had issues with Catterall style for much of the contest and was also knocked down for the first time in his career.

"It's a good thing for the sport. It's a good thing for Josh Taylor," McGuigan told Sky Sports News. "I think it was quite clear, not just to us boxing people but just even the casual fans, Josh didn't win that fight. It was reasonably close.

A rematch is likely on the cards - with Taylor dropping two of his four world titles in recent months. Taylor walked away from the WBA title, when the sanctioning body ordered him to face Alberto Puello. And last week he vacated the WBC title, with an outstanding order to defend against Jose Zepeda.

Taylor has made it clear that his top priority is to set the record straight in a rematch with Catterall.

McGuigan believes Taylor is capable of securing a victory in the second contest - if he's capable of fixing the mistakes that led to a lackluster performance in the first outing.

"A prime Josh Taylor beats Jack Catterall, in my opinion," McGuigan said. "If he can correct his mistakes that he was making in the first fight.

"A guy that's firing like he should do beats Jack Catterall. So if he can get back, get training, get his head stuck into the training camp and win it, I think that'll be good for his resume."
