StubHub Center, Carson, California - 2012 US Olympian Jose Ramirez won a clear, but hard-fought four round unanimous decision over Daniel Calzada. Ramirez (6-0, 4 KOs) landed the more-telling blows during the fight. At times, Ramirez stand and trade, allowing Calzada to land counter left hooks to the head. There were more moments Ramirez looked as though he would go in for the kill, but Calzada (8-9-2, 1 KO) hung in there. All three judges scored the bout 40-36 in favor of Ramirez.

Lightweight Jose Felix, Jr. (25-0-1, 20 KOs) knocked out Joseph Laryea in the first round of a scheduled eight round bout. A left hook-right hand combination dropped Laryea down to the canvas. Laryea (11-9, 10 KOs) struggled to get up as referee Pat Russell counted him out at 2:37.

Super welterweight Daniel Sandoval won an eight round unanimous decision over Richar Gutierrez. Both fighters came out aggressively from the opening bell, trading punches and combinations to the delight of the crowd. The action slowed down considerably, which would have favored the older Gutierrez. Instead, Sandoval would beat Gutierrez (26-12-1, 16 KOs) to the punch often during the fight. Sandoval (33-2, 30 KOs) did not display the power that had stopped many foes as Gutierrez was never hurt or in danger when he was hit in the fight. All three judges scored the bout in favor of Sandoval, 79-73, 79-73, and 80-72.

Welterweight Karim Mayfield stopped Chris Fernandez in the eighth round of a scheduled 10 round bout. Mayfield (18-0-1, 11 KOs) used his awkward, but not crowd-pleasing style to work, not allowing Fernandez distance to counter. However, Mayfield would at times smother himself, allowing Fernandez (21-16-1, 12 KOs) to defensively tie up on the inside. Mayfield dropped Fernandez with a right to the head in the fourth round. Later in the round, Mayfield dropped Fernandez with a barrage of punches. Fernandez had his moments, landing counter right or left hands to the head, but not enough or consistently throughout the fight. Towards the end of the eighth round, Mayfield dropped Fernandez with a left hook to the body. Referee Ray Corona began to administer an eight-count, but waved the fight over at 2:59.

Diego Magdaleno won a one-sided decision over Edgar Riovalle. The southpaw Magdaleno (24-1, 9 KOs) was coming off a 12 round split-decision loss to Roman “Rocky” Martinez in his last bout on April 6th. He was much busier than Riovalle, landing an array of punches and combinations onto Riovalle (35-16-2, 25 KOs). At times, Riovalle would switch back and forth from a conventional to southpaw. However, it did little to offset Magdaleno’s punches as Riovalle was very stationary and easy to hit. While Magdaleno was in control for most of the fight, there were times when he would not follow up on his punches, especially when Riovalle was backing up against the ropes. All three judges, including Boxingscene.com, scored the bout 100-90 in favor of Magdaleno.

Featherweight Gabino Saenz stopped Dominic Coca in the first round of a scheduled six round bout. Saenz (11-0-1, 8 KOs) dropped Coca with a counter left hook to the head within the first 30 seconds. Coca (8-5, 2 KOs) tried to fight back, but did not have the firepower to keep Saenz off of him. Later in the round, Saenz hurt Coca with a right hand to the head and sent him back against the ropes with a right uppercut to the head. Referee Dr. Lou Moret saw enough and waved the fight over at 2:27 to the disappointment of Coca, who felt he could have continued.

Middleweight Matt Korobov fought to an eight round unanimous decision over fringe contender Grady Brewer. The southpaw Korobov (21-0, 12 KOs) was in control throughout the entire fight, punishing Brewer with lead left hands or counter right hooks to the head. Brewer (30-17, 16 KOs) was not able to mount any significant offense, holding Korobov when both were on the inside. Korobov dropped Brewer in the fifth round with a barrage of punches, although Brewer thought it was a slip. The action at times was sloppy, but Korobov landed the more effective punches during those exchanges. All three judges scored the bout in favor of Korobov, 80-71, 80-71, and 79-72. Korobov has been mentioned as a possible opponent for Gennady Golovkin, should Golovkin beat Curtis Stevens on November 2nd.
