In a very strange night of fights in San Diego, nothing went according to plan. That is unless you are welterweight contender Walter Dario Matthysse.

The 27-year old from Santa Fe, Argentina brought canons in both fists and levied some serious hurt to "The X Man" Xavier Tolliver in the first round of their scheduled 10 round "main attraction."

The main event between hot-middleweight contender Marco Antonio Rubio of Mexico and Aslanbek Kodzoev of Russia was forced to be scrapped when Rubio didn’t pass his pre-fight physical.

The capacity crowd at San Diego’s 4th and B was disappointed but boisterous nevertheless for the final installment of HBO Latino Boxeo De Oro. The popular series, like the main event, went out with a whimper instead of a thud.

But this night was not about the end of boxing on Boxeo De Oro, but more of the fists of fury of a very heavy-handed man from Argentina who triumphed in his debut in the United States.

De La Hoya signed Matthysse (24-0, 23KOs) and has added legitimate welterweight to his stable. The serious Matthysse, who is extremely focused in the ring, went to work on the body with vicious left hooks and thudding right hands. It was a classic example of chopping the trunk and the tree with fall. No one figured the end would occur at 2:27 of the first round.

Matthysse hit Tolliver (20-5, 14KOs) so hard to the jaw, that Tolliver’s leg was seen shaking while he was on the canvass a la Floyd Patterson against Ingemar Johannsen II. With power in both hands, Matthysse seems ready to make a big statement in an already loaded welterweight division.

In other action, super featherweight Aaron Garcia (7-2) kept relentless pressure on Angel Mata (11-5-1) and shut him out in a four-round under card. Neither man was significantly hurt, but Garcia did land the better punches to the body and slowed Mata down enough to take the victory.

Finally, Eriberto Ponce of Los Angeles, CA defeated Carlos Lopez of Tijuana, Mexico in their four-round featherweight fight.
