Former four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez believes Isaac Cruz has the ability to become the next major player in Mexican boxing.

Cruz has really increased his status in the lightweight division after losing a competitive twelve round decision to division superstar Gervonta Davis in 2021. The outcome was the first defeat suffered by Cruz in the pro ranks.

This past Sunday in Los Angeles, Cruz wiped out Eduardo Ramirez in two rounds.

“He is a strong fighter, a fighter who hits hard, a fighter who goes out there and looks for the opponent, and I think that is very important, it is the type of boxing that people like," Marquez said.

"You have to remember in Los Angeles, how happy the people were, the people gave themselves to him, because he is also a fighter who gives himself [to the fans] and a fighter who likes to put on a show."

One boxer that Cruz has been targeting for some time is undefeated contender Ryan Garcia, who recently moved up to the junior welterweight limit of 140-pounds.

Marquez feels the aggressive style of Cruz would create a lot of problems for Garcia.

“I think that in some ways, the style that Cruz brings is the type that can hurt Ryan Garcia, the battle-hardened style, the indecipherable style, because Cruz has a style that you cannot decipher, a style where you don't know where a punch is coming from. He can hurt everyone, he has the perfect style that Ryan Garcia does not like. The style of getting in, of fighting, of going to look for it, and I think that is the style that can hurt Ryan Garcia," Marquez said.
