After his thrilling TKO win over game Mexican boxer Jesus Soto Karass on Sept. 15 at the MGM Hotel on Las Vegas, former WBA Super Lightweight world champion and current Welterweight contender Marcos “El Chino” Maidana of Argentina discusses his present and future.

“I’m really happy since I was anxious to fight since last May. It was the longest training camp in my career. But it was for a good reason ‘cause it allowed me to pick up a few things from my new trainer Robert Garcia and I think it paid off in the ring,” Maidana said.

Regarding hooking up with Garcia, “El Chino” said that “Robert told me to use my jab, head movement and my legs much more than I usually do. And I guess I improved in those areas. Overall, all my team did a great job and I’ve felt very comfortable during training camp Robert’s gym in Oxnard.”

“I wanted to prove the world that the fight against (Devon) Alexander was only an off night for me. And I wanted to prove that I do bring my power and punch to 147 lbs. Soto Karass has a hell of a chin and a heart the size of a lion. However, I was able to clearly knock him down and finish him off. They now tell me it was one of the best fights of the year and I’m glad to hear that!”

Maidana also talked about his future step in the 147 lbs. division, in which some now considers him a force to be reckoned with.

“Now it’s up to my promoter Golden Boy Promotions and my advisor Sebastian Contursi to get a big fight and I know they will. This is a division plenty of great fighters the likes of Guerrero, Malignaggi, Alexander, Bradley. Not to mention Mayweather or Pacquiao or Khan if he moves up. It’ll be an honor to get in the ring with any of them. I’m ready to go back to Oxnard any minute since I want to keep learning and, most specially, keep giving the fans the excitement they deserve”.
