The spring season of Boxeo Telemundo ended on a high note, a good thing considering it’s the last boxing telecast to be enjoyed for a while.

The March 13 edition—which saw Adrien Curiel outpoint Hugo ‘Verdugo’ Guarneros in a 10-round battle of local flyweights live from Domo Sindicato de Trabajadores IMSS (Mexico Institute of Social Security) in Mexico City—averaged 442,000 viewers according to Nielsen Media Research. The figure marked the strongest showing for the series’ spring season, also providing a 43% increase from the February 21 season premiere from Miami.

It also served as a 44% improvement from the March 6 telecast, which also aired from Mexico City but which played to a season low average of 307,000 viewers. For Curiel, it was nearly a 47% increase from his previous Telemundo appearance, a 10-round win over Mario Andrade from this same venue last October which averaged 301,000 viewers.

Telemundo also once again managed to edge out a competing boxing telecast. The show aired live beginning at 11:35pm ET, running head-to-head with a portion of Showtime’s Shobox telecast, which took place without fans in attendance at Grand Casino in Hinckley, Minnesota.

Interestingly, the lone overlap between shows also saw the highest rating average of the night for Showtime, which topped out at an average of 175,000 viewers for Brian Norman’s technical decision win over Flavio Rodriguez. The main event saw Brandun Lee blast out overmatched Camilo Prieto in three rounds, with an average of 145,000 viewers tuning in for the final televised main event in the U.S. in the foreseeable future.

Both shows somehow survived the cut while a number of cards—including two scheduled to take place at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater on March 14 (ESPN) and March 17 (ESPN+)—canceled deep into fight week due to the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

For Telemundo, it meant the completion of its four-show spring season block, although questions remain abound as to whether the network will get its next batch aired as scheduled. The next Boxeo Telemundo telecast is due to air May 1, followed by shows on May 8, May 15 and May 22. All are officially in jeopardy of being postponed, as has been the case with any show scheduled from mid-March all the way through the end of April.
