Monte Carlo - In a battle of heavyweight contenders, Luis 'King Kong' Ortiz (26-0, 21KOs) scored three knockdowns, but was forced to go the full twelve round distance with a lopsided decision win over Malik Scott (38-3-1, 13KOs) in a very lackluster fight. This was Ortiz's first fight under the Matchroom Sport promotional banner. The scores were 120-105, 120-106 and 119-106.

Ortiz came out on the front foot, backing up Scott and applying a lot of pressure. Scott was on his toes, moving around and not really trying to engage at all. At one point the referee called time in the first round and called on Scott to fight. All of the punches were coming in from Ortiz and Scott was doing nothing but running around the ring.

In the second round, Ortiz continued to come forward with the pressure. Scott was staying away and trying to catch Ortiz walking in. Ortiz was taking his time, walking slow and allowing Scott to run around the ring. The third round was more of the same, with Ortiz trying to track down Scott with big punches. Scott was barely throwing anything in return, just circling around and staying away from Ortiz's incoming shots.

During the fourth round, Ortiz threw a winging shot that put Scott down. Scott took his time getting up off the floor and claimed he was hit to the back of the head. Scott was nearly counted out, but the referee gave him a very slow count. Ortiz was trying to finish him off, but Scott continued to run around the ring, cover up and wanted no part of engaging.

At the start of the fifth, Scott was trying to bait Ortiz. Scott was dropped again with hard shot, and once again he claim the shot landed to the back of the head. Scott beat the count and Ortiz continued to stalk and let his hands go. The sixth round was very similar to the fifth. During the seventh, Scott came up with his head and smashed Ortiz right in the jaw, actually rattling and shaking up the legs of the hard puncher. Ortiz quickly recovered and took back control.

Scott started landing some sneaky counters in the eight. They had zero effect on Ortiz. At the start of the ninth, Ortiz dropped Scott for the third time with a shot to the body. Scott once again got up and was using his legs to move around to clear his head as Ortiz was looking for the finish. There wasn't much action in the tenth, with Scott just looking to survive for three minutes. The eleventh and the twelfth was more of the same with not much action. Scott was surviving and Ortiz was looking to land something.
