TOOWOOMBA-trained Les Sherrington and Jack Asis maintained a perfect winning start to the year for Smithy's Gym boxers with comprehensive victories in Townsville last night.

Sherrington - the reigning WBF world middleweight and WBO Asia Pacific champion - overcame an opening round head-cut to outpoint Argentinean Esteban Ponce in a shortened bout.

Asis completed his seventh straight victory with a unanimous points win on the undercard over Indonesia's Rivo Rengkung.

Trainer Brendon Smith said both fighters dug deep for exceptional victories.

"Les was outstanding and did a hell of a job after receiving a nasty gash to his forehead in a huge head clash just 15 seconds into the fight," Smith said.

"It was bad enough to stop the fight there and then and I did consider pulling Les out at that stage.

"But I was satisfied enough with how coherent and composed he was and the doctor allowed the fight to continue.

"It did change the tempo of the fight knowing Les had to try and build a points lead in case the fight was stopped after the fourth round and a result was given.

"Les responded beautifully to gradually get on top of Ponce and when the doctor stopped the bout at the start of the sixth round Les had done more than enough to get a unanimous points decision.

"In all honesty if it went another two rounds I think Les would have got in on a stoppage.

"Jack also dominated his fight (eight rounds) to score a unanimous points win.

"I was really impressed with the level of the fight and the way Jack controlled it against a very tough and dangerous opponent.

"We're over the moon with the results which gives Smithy's Gym a 100% win record so far this year after our great night at Rumours last Friday.

"What a way for everyone to start 2013."
