Former two-time featherweight champion Josh Warrington is still in position for big fights, according to his promoter Eddie Hearn.

Some of the options include a domestic showdown with WBA champion Leigh Wood at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground or a potential trip to the United States for a big fight.

On Saturday night in Leeds, Warrington suffered the second defeat of his pro career when he was outpointed by mandatory challenger Luis Alberto Lopez of Mexico, who walked away with the IBF world title.

Lopez built up a very large lead on the cards, which Warrington was unable to overcome with a big rally in the championship rounds.

Despite the unexpected loss, Hearn is planning to match Warrington in a big fight in the coming year.

The biggest option, at the moment, is a pairing against Wood, who made a statement earlier this year with a dramatic knockout of Michael Conlan in the final round.

"I’d love to give him a big fight in America. It could be Leo Santa Cruz, the fans would love a trip," Hearn said.

"I still think Josh is world class, an elite featherweight. That wasn’t the performance of a fading fighter — just a fighter who was up against a very good challenger. There’s another chapter to write in the Josh Warrington story. He could fight Wood at the City Ground in the summer."

Wood, who was sitting at ringside, was very open to having a domestic showdown with Warrington.

"‘That would draw a massive crowd. Warrington’s got a big (Leeds) following and so have I — it’s two rival cities both in the Premier League. I want that City Ground fight and Josh is probably the only man around at the minute who can do it with me," Wood said.
