International Boxing Hall of Fame member Larry Merchant was in Las Vegas earlier this month for the Canelo Alvarez-Sergey Kovalev showdown. The fight was very close through 10 rounds before Alvarez ended the fight in the 11th round with a 2 punch knockout victory.

Merchant spoke to the press after the fight on a variety of topics.  One of which is a potential welterweight unification bout that would pit WBC/IBF champion Errol Spence versus WBO champion Terence Crawford.  Fans and media alike have been clamoring for the fight for over a year.

When pressed to pick a winner, Merchant said that he could see the fight go either way but stressed that  what is most important is that the fight gets actually made.

"I don't know. Spence is a big welterweight and Crawford is a small welterweight and that could matter.  They are both terrific fighters and I want to see the fight.  I don't know but I would like to see the fight. It is important for everybody to get behind the idea to get that fight made," Merchant told BoxingScene.com.

Merchant was also asked about the December 7th Andy Ruiz-Anthony Joshua heavyweight rematch that will take place in Saudi Arabia and be streamed live on DAZN.  Ruiz shocked the world when he stopped Joshua in June as a heavy underdog.

The former HBO analyst expects Ruiz to emerge victorious in the rematch as well.

"I would favor Ruiz but acknowledging that Joshua has had 6 months to rearm because I think he got shocked - just because he probably hadn't heard of Ruiz a month before the fight. He was a late substitute and he was clearly out of shape even for a guy who normally fights out of shape. I will be curious to see it and I wouldn't be shocked if Joshua won but Ruiz is a hard kind of guy to beat," Merchant stated.
