Another fight card, another cancellation.

The cruiserweight bout between Sergey Kovalev and Sullivan Barrera, which was scheduled for April 25 at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California, has been cancelled, Golden Boy Promotions announced Tuesday evening.

The announcement was made in compliance with Riverside County’s (California) ordinance ‘banning large public due to concerns regarding COVID-19, also known as the coronavirus.

“Whether it’s in Riverside County (where Indio is located) or Los Angeles County, it is clear that we must take every precaution to prevent the potential spread of COVID-19,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy. “We lament the hardship this has caused for our fighters, partners, employees, and state officials. We look forward to providing better news in the coming weeks.”

“The health of our guests and Golden Boy’s athletes is our top priority,” said Paul Ryan, General Manager of Fantasy Springs Resort Casino. “This week, we’ve seen professional sports leagues err on the side of caution, from the NBA and college basketball to the PGA and Major League Baseball, and we’re doing the same. It’s the right thing to do, and we look forward to having another stellar Golden Boy card here in the future.”

The Kovalev-Barrera fight was the main event of a stellar card that featured four world title fights. Patrick Teixeira of Brazil was scheduled to defend his WBO junior middleweight title against Argentina’s Brian Castano.

Also on the card, WBC strawweight titleholder Chayaphon Moonsri (aka Wanheng Menayothin) was to make his United States debut against Marco J. Rementizo of the Philippines. Moosri of Thailand signed a promotional deal with Golden Boy in July.

IBF junior flyweight titleholder Felix Alvarado of Nicaragua was scheduled to face South Africa’s DeeJay Kriel. Alvarado’s twin brother and WBA ‘Regular’ junior lightweight titleholder Rene Alvarado was to face Roger Gutierrez of Venezuela.

Golden Boy also stated in the release they would announce a new date at Fantasy Springs as soon as is reasonable possible.
