Michael Koncz, the manager for Filipino boxers Rodel Mayol (30-5-2, 22KOs) and Richie Mepranum (25-2-1, 5KOs), has advised BoxingScene.com that neither fighter is going to face WBA flyweight champion Hernan "Tyson" Marquez (32-2, 25KOs) later tonight at the Centro de Usos Multiples in Ciudad Obregon, Sonora. Mayol was scheduled to fight Marquez in the main event.

As BoxingScene reported on Friday, Koncz pulled Mayol after a controversial afternoon weigh-in, where Marquez stepped on the scale four times in a span of 2 to 3 minutes. Marquez was two pounds over on his initial attempt. The champion, fully undressed, made two more attempts to make weight, and both times he was over the limit of 112-pounds.

Finally, on his fourth attempt to make weight, he allegedly came in at 112. But Koncz doesn't believe the champion actually made weight. He tells BoxingScene that Marquez's feet were hanging halfway off the front of the scale, his towel was pulling on the scale and members of the Marquez team were touching the fighter as he was weighing in. Koncz is also wondering how Marquez managed to make two pounds vanish in span of 2 to 3 minutes.

"This all transpired in two and a half to three minutes. I complained to the WBA's guy, that there were too many guys on the stage and the towel was pulling on the scale and there were guys behind him touching him and stuff. I talked to the commission, I wanted everyone off [the stage]. Bring back the fighter plus two and have him make weight. They said 'its too late, he already drank water. I said 'what the f*** did you let him drink water when we have a controversy going on.' So I said the hell with it and said 'we're leaving' and we left,' Koncz told BoxingScene.com on Saturday.

Zanfer Promotions, who handle Marquez, came back to Koncz on Saturday and tried to secure Richie Mepranum in place of Mayol. Mepranum is scheduled to fight on the undercard. Obviously Zanfer wants to avoid the likely possibility of issuing refunds to numerous fans who were expecting to witness a title fight.

Mepranum wants the fight, but Koncz - fearful for his fighter's safety - will not approve the match.

"I'm not authorizing that. How can I authorize that with a clear conscience and a clear heart - to take one fighter out and throw another one in. I hate to depriver fighters of opportunites but I can't do that with a clear heart and a clear mind. That's what they asked about and the fighter is willing to do it, but I'm sitting here with [Mepranum] right now and I'm explaining to him that I just can't do it," Koncz said.

"Rick, the issue here, is if they would have come to us from the start and said 'we have a weight issue here' - he would have then went to the scale and if he [Marquez] was over a pound or two, then you go and try to lose it and I would send one of my guys [with Marquez] to make sure that you're working and not just sitting in the room, that you're making an honest effort to lose the weight. If he was than a quarter of a pound or a pound [over the limit], then we would have worked something out. They didn't do that. They just tried to insult our intelligence and we really don't know what the real weight was."
