Kevin Satchell (8-0, 1KO) stunned Paul Edwards (9-2, 3KOs) to claim the Commonwealth flyweight title at Aintree on Saturday night.

Satchell, in just his eighth professional bout, looked a worthy challenger for the vacant strap from the opening bell, looking confident and sharp despite weighing-in 3lb under limit.

The 23-year-old was by far the stronger and repeatedly had the better of the early exchanges, landing with some quality right hands and usually ending each exchange on top.

The pair knew each other well, fighting several times as amateurs and sparring countless times, but Edwards found few answers to the questions posed by the taller man despite their familiarity.

By halfway Satchell was clearly on top, but when Edwards started to have more success he might have thought his opponent was starting to tire on his first outing beyond six rounds.

But despite getting a little ragged, Satchell continued to land the more telling blows with the right hand causing serious problems, while a fierce straight left sent Edwards's head rocking back in the ninth.

In the 10th Edwards started to ship some serious punishment and it was the right call when Franny Smith threw in the towel, handing Satchell local bragging rights and a sensational win.

Also on the Aintree bill, Ashley Theophane went home without the Lonsdale Belt after he lost on points to late stand-in Darren Hamilton.

Theophane struggled against another late replacement Ben Murphy last time out and it was a similar story against 33-year-old Hamilton, who came in earlier in the week after Steve Williams withdrew with a chest infection.

The much-travelled Theophane would have held the belt for keeps had he made his third defence a winning one, but Hamilton took it on all three cards.
