Many observers were surprised when Erickson “Hammer” Lubin’s name was announced as the winner after his fight against unbeaten super welterweight prospect Jesus Ramos. The final tallies were 117-111, 116-112 and 115-113 all in favor of Lubin. (photo by Ryan Hafey)

The fight took place on the Canelo Alvarez-Jermell Charlo pay-per-view undercard on the Las Vegas strip.

Lubin’s trainer Kevin Cunningham believes his fighter did what he needed to do to come out with the victory.

“I thought Hammer controlled the tempo of the fight with a good stiff jab and lateral movement. Hammer landed the more cleaner and effective punches throughout the fight. Ramos was totally ineffective in the center of the ring. The only times Ramos landed anything is when Hammer was on the ropes,” said Cunningham to BoxingScene.com.

“They were expecting Hammer to come out flat footed, stand toe to toe and bang. Everybody knows that Hammer don’t mind brawling but he has other dimensions to his game also. He has a very good jab, good hand speed and boxing ability. Ramos is a very good young fighter that will be world champion. I wish Ramos and his team nothing but the best.”

With the judges score totals not being very close, Cunningham doesn’t believe that there is any controversy to speak about.

“It wasn’t a split decision, it was unanimous.  All three judges saw the same fight and they got it right," Cunningham said.
