Kell Brook has offered a candid apology to his fans and loved ones after a controversial video put him in tabloid crosshairs.

On Thursday, the retired British welterweight from Sheffield, England, took to social media to address a recent clip that showed him snorting a white substance, presumably something like cocaine, at what appeared to be a party hosted at his home.

The video was published by The Sun, a British tabloid, sparking immediate controversy, with many deriding the publication for its decision to publicize a private act.

Brook admitted his life after boxing has not been easy.

“I messed up, I hold my hands up & want to apologise to my family, gym, friends & fans,” Brook wrote on Twitter. “It’s no secret that I struggle with mental health & I’m finding retirement really hard. I’m actively seeking the help I need to get me on the right path. Again i apologise for the hurt I’ve caused.”

In the video, Brook is shown snorting a powdery white substance over a coffee table with a rolled-up piece of paper. After getting up, Brook looks at the camera and says “nice” while shadow boxing.

Brook retired shortly after his last fight, a sixth-round beatdown of his bitter nemesis Amir Khan at Manchester Arena in Manchester last February. Khan also announced his retirement after that fight.

On social media, many users expressed support for Brook, while suggesting that the fighter might want to be more wary of the company he keeps.

Recently, Ben Shalom, the head of Boxxer, the promoter that presided over Khan-Brook, informed Sky Sports that Brook was “desperate” to fight the winner of the middleweight bout between Liam Smith and Chris Eubank Jr., which the former won by fourth-round knockout. Smith and Eubank could be headed for an immediate rematch later this year, if Eubank decides to activate his rematch clause.

Brook ended his career with a record of 40 wins against three losses. He became the IBF welterweight champion when he defeated Shawn Porter in 2014.
