Julio Cesar "Rey" Martinez, the flyweight champion of the World Boxing Council (WBC), asserted that he urgently needs to fight with Puerto Rico's McWilliams Arroyo to prove that he is the best in his division.

"I would like to fight Arroyo in September or October to unify the [WBC] titles and show that I am the best at flyweight. I need that fight, so next year I'll try to go up to super flyweight," Martinez told EFE.

A couple of weeks ago Martínez; with a record of 18 wins; 14 of them by knockout and one loss, made the third defense of his title against his compatriot Joel Córdova, whom he defeated by technical knockout in Guadalajara, Jalisco.

After this defense, Julio Cesar has as a mandatory defense with Arroyo, who holds the interim-WBC flyweight championship. Arroyo has a record of 21 wins, 16 by knockout, and four losses.

They were scheduled to fight this past February, but Martinez suffered a right hand injury that postponed the bout.

The 26-year-old fighter reflected back on his younger days and explained that in order to gain a solid position in professional boxing, he had to take part in more than two hundred amateur fights.

"The road has not been easy, before reaching the pros I had 250 amateur fights, it has been a very beautiful journey that I  enjoy a lot more now that I am world champion - but I am not satisfied, I want much more," Martinez said.

The dangerous puncher acknowledged that his offensive style and the power of his left hand are the main ingredients to taking out his opponents.

"What hurts them the most about my style is that I like to go right to the front, to look for the opponent regardless of their style. I like to present an aggressive style to find out right away who has the most fragile jaw," Martinez said.
