WBO interim-junior welterweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez (54-6-1, 39KOs) seems to have a choice. In his mind, the most suitable opponnent to fight on July 14th in undefeated lightweight Mercito Gesta (25-0-1, 13KOs), and not former four division king Erik Morales. Marquez is targeting a fall showdown with Manny Pacquiao, should he beat Timothy Bradley on June 9th. Marquez wants a southpaw opponent to prepare himself for a potential fourth Pacquaio clash.

"There was talk of Gesta or [Cesar] Cuenca, I want a left-handed opponent. Morales was discussed but if the fight with Pacquiao is made, I do not see a reason to fight with a right [handed boxer] instead of facing an opponent who has the same guard of Pacquiao," Marquez told BoxingScene.com.

"The important thing is to face an opponent with the characteristics of Pacquiao. Gesta is a young fighter, with speed, and he meets the profile. When I find out my opponent, I will also define my sparring parters, looking for left handed boxers with speed. Gesta is good, undefeated, and meets the characteristics."

"I am in the strong stage of my training. It will last for one month and then I'll begin with the speed."
