Sources in Mexico have advised BoxingScene.com that a WBC final featherweight eliminator is going to match unbeaten contenders Joseph Diaz (24-0, 13 KOs) and Jorge Lara (29-0-2, 21 KOs).

The fight, according to sources, is most likely going to end up on the undercard of Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin, as part of the HBO Pay-Per-View undercard on September 16th from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Diaz and Lara are the two highest ranked available contenders. Diaz is ranked in the number 2 spot, while Lara is ranked at 5.

The current WBC featherweight champion is Gary Russell Jr. (28-1, 17 KOs), who retained his title back in May with a seventh round stoppage of mandatory challenger Oscar Escandon. Russell now has the option of making a voluntary defense. Due to injuries and postponements, Russell has only averaged a single fight a year since 2015.

Diaz holds the NABF title and captured the vacant NABO title in May, with a ten round unanimous decision over unbeaten Manuel Avila. That contest took place on the HBO Pay-Per-View undercard to Canelo's fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Lara also saw action in May, when he stopped Mario Briones in three rounds in Laredo, Texas. Last April, Lara came out guns blazing when he blasted out former world champion Fernando Montiel in the first round. Montiel was down four times.
