ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – Hugo Alberto Roldan made Joseph Adorno earn every second of his close 10-round win Friday night.

The rough, awkward Argentinean got up from a second-round knockdown and pressed the favored junior welterweight for most of their highly competitive main event at Bally’s Event Center. That knockdown was the difference on all three scorecards, though, and Adorno fought through injuries to both hands to eke out a one-point unanimous decision in this "ShoBox: The New Generation" main event.

Judges John McKaie, Joseph Pasquale and Robin Taylor all scored their fight 95-94 for Adorno, who won a third straight bout since undefeated Dominican contender Michel Rivera dealt Adorno his lone loss 5½ months ago.

The 23-year-old Adorno, of Allentown, Pennsylvania, improved to 17-1-2 (14 KOs). The 29-year-old Roldan lost for the first time as a pro (21-1-1, 7 KOs).

With their back-and-forth fight seemingly competitive on the cards, Adorno and Roldan traded shots throughout the 10th round. Adorno appeared to favor his right hand again in that final round, though.

Adorno landed a right hand and spun out of harm’s way early in the ninth round. A counter left hook by Adorno connected later in the ninth round.

Adorno’s short right uppercut caught Roldan as he leaned forward with 30 seconds on the clock in the eighth round. Roldan’s right-left combination knocked Adorno into the ropes with just over a minute to go in the eighth round.

A right-left combination by Roldan stopped Adorno from moving forward late in the seventh round. Adorno attempted to work off his jab in that round, but Roldan’s awkwardness made him effective at times.

Fighting from a southpaw stance, Roldan connected with a straight left hand early in the sixth round. Adorno countered Roldan with several right hands as the sixth round progressed, but Roldan was affected by those punches.

Roldan countered Adorno with a left hook in the fifth round, but Adorno took that punch well.

Roldan lunged forward and landed a right hand as Adorno backed into a neutral corner early in the fourth round. A counter left hand by Adorno buckled Roldan’s knees several seconds before the fourth round ended.

After suffering a knockdown late in the second round, Roldan tried to smother Adorno’s power and rough him up in the third round.

Adorno nailed Roldan with a left hook to the side of his head that caused a knockdown just before the bell sounded to end the second round. That shot made Roldan fall forward and touch the canvas with both of his gloves.

Esteves warned Roldan for head-butting Adorno early in the second round. Roldan acknowledged Adorno’s hard left to his body later in the second round and moved away from Adorno.

Roldan went at Adorno as soon as the bell rang to start their fight and landed a right hand barely five seconds into it. Adorno made him pay about 20 seconds into the first round, though, when he landed a left hook that knocked Roldan off balance as he rushed forward.
