Caguas, Puerto Rico -  Jose "Wonder Boy" Lopez used his patience and stuck his game plan to unanimously defeat veteran Orlando "El Fenomeno" Cruz in the main event fight of the Night of Champions card at the  coliseum Roger L. Mendoza. Photo by Andre Kang.

The official scores were 98-92, 97-93, 99-91.

After a minute of scoring at the start of the fight, Cruz connected a good combination of four punches that started to the body and ended in the face of his opponent. Lopez remained patient and closed with two good combinations on his part, backing up Cruz, who is skilled in that style of combat. Cruz realized that Lopez was backing him up in the second round, so he tried to advance with a single punch and then grab in close.

Then López changed slightly of strategy, to confuse Cruz. In the third, Wonder Boy sometimes took to the offensive, but with straight punches instead of combinations. In the fourth, it was Cruz who took out his plan B. He started very aggressive, arriving several times with strong shots to Lopez's face.

With 10 seconds left in the fifth, two left hooks in a row made Cruz falter, and he immediately went to grab. The seventh was all Lopez, who sometimes used the strategy of the great Mexican gladiator Julio Cesar Chavez: accepting the idea of landing a punch to land one of his own.

Cruz used his experience in the eighth. Lopez slowly forced him to a corner, and just as he thought he would connect his artillery, Crúz hugged him.

In the ninth, Lopez shook Cruz, leaving him stunned against the ropes. He could not finish him, in part by the continuous holding of Cruz. The tenth round saw Lopez more aggressive than at any other time in the bout. The Phenomenon had to resort to continuous holding to weather the storm and hear the final bell.

With the triumph, Lopez retains his International title affiliated with the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and improves his record to 18-1-1, with 13 knockouts. Cruz was left with his future uncertain and with a professional record of 24-6, with 13 knockouts.

It was the second straight loss for Cruz, who came into the fight off a loss by TKO to WBO lightweight champion Terry Flanagan.
