Featherweight prospect Jose Enrique Durantes defeated veteran Jose Estrella by unanimous decision Sunday evening at the Club Events Center in San Bernardino, California.

Durantes, who is originally from Texcoco, Mexico and now resides in the Los Angeles suburb of Montebello, was the quicker and more-effective fighter throughout most of the fight. Scores were 80-71, 80-71, and 79-72 for Durantes, who improves to 17-0, 9 knockouts.

Sunday’s fight was also Durantes’ first in the United States.

Estrella, who resides in Tijuana, Mexico, drops to 20-17-1, 14 KOs and has now lost five of his last six bouts.

Also on the Garcia Promotions card, featherweight prospect Luis Coria (12-2, 6 KOs) of nearby Moreno Valley knocked out Tijuana’s Cristian Renteria at 2:56 of the second round. The 20-year-old Coria, who is trained by Robert Garcia, has now won his last three fights since his split-decision loss to Thomas Valdez on Nov. 17.

Junior welterweight Alfredo Escarcega knocked out Luis Angel Silva (5-13, 2 KOs) of Tijuana at 2:16 of the opening round. Escarcega (8-0, 4 KOs) stands 6’0” and resides in the Phoenix suburb of Avondale.

Bantamweight Manuel Flores defeated Tijuana’s Jose Alfredo Flores (6-10 2 NC, 3 KOs) by unanimous decision over four rounds. Scores were 40-36, 40-36, and 39-37 for Flores, who resides in the Southern California desert city of Coachella and improves to 8-0, 5 KOs.

In junior welterweight action, David Ortiz (2-0, 1 KO) of nearby Bloomington knocked out Tijuana’s Jose Mora (1-6) at 1:36 of the second round.

A four-round exhibition fight also took place on the card between Mikey Garcia and Erik Morales. The fight was put together as an attraction to raise funds for Isaac Colunga, an unbeaten prospect who was shot in the early morning hours of Mar. 3 at a house party in Riverside. Colunga, who was a bus driver transporting children with special needs, still has a bullet lodged in his neck.

Proceeds from the card benefitted Colunga, who is at a rehab center in Denver, and according to Garcia, is doing as well as he could be.

“100 percent of the proceeds (from Sunday’s show) will go to Izaac,” Garcia told Boxingscene Monday night. “We went to see him a couple of weeks ago in Denver and he’s in good spirits. He’s going through therapies and doing very good.”

“We had a very good turnout. A lot of people came to support the cause. We want to thank Erik Morales for being part of this event.”
