Full Sail University, Winter Park, Florida - Cuban Yudel Jhonson (17-1, 9 KO’s) suffered his second pro defeat to Mexican Jorge Cota (24-1, 22 KO’s) in the second fight of the Super Welterweight Tournament. The fight started fast and the pace continued throughout the fight

Cota landed a big right hand that stunned Jhonson in the 1st round. Jhonson recovered well and stunned Cota with combinations to the head set up by excellent body shots that opened Cota up.

Through 3 rounds both men were trading heavy fire power. At the end of the 3rd round, Cota landed a check hook that sent Jhonson to the canvas and through the ropes but the referee ruled the punch was after the bell, meaning Cota didn’t get credit for the knockdown.

But Cota took that momentum into the 4th and had his best round that got him back into the fight.

Jhonson was having a bounce back round in the 6th but was docked a point for holding and hitting. Jhonson landed a good uppercut and likely won the round but the point deduction could have changed the dynamic of the scoring.

In one of the better rounds of an action packed fight, Jhonson was knocked down by a left hand that looked like it missed. It could have been fatigued or a wet ring by nonetheless it was ruled as a knockdown.

Jhonson was rocked by a big right hand that made his glove hit the canvas for the second official knockdown of the fight. Cota landed a right hook that stunned Jhonson and he fell to the ground again, but once again the referee ruled it a slip.

Jhonson fatigued and let it all hang out in the 10th, taking shots from Cota and trying to land some of his own. The two went toe to toe to the bell.

Cota won on the cards 95-92, 96-91, 96-91, and now will face the John Jackson who won his bout earlier to kick off the tournament.

The opening bout of the four man Super Welterweight tournament between John Jackson (20-2, 15 KO’s) and Dennis Laurente (49-6-5, 30 KO’s) saw Jackson pitch a near shutout against the Filipino fighter.

The son of Julius Jackson, John ‘D Rock” Jackson won with the fight early on with body work switching from southpaw to orthodox. Jackson was definitely quicker to the punch and faster on his feet.

In the middle of the ring, Jackson was controlling and landing pretty much when he wanted. Two fights removed from being knocked out by Andy Lee in a fight he was likely winning, Jackson send Laurente to the canvas with a huge right hook to start the 3rd round. Laurente recovered well but whatever Jackson seemed to want to do, he did.

In the 6th Johnson tried to put a stamp in the middle rounds with a big uppercut and a 3 punch combination that probably stole a round where Laurente did his best work. Jackson continued peppering Laurente’s face with powerful right hands down the pipe and rounds 8 and 9.

Jackson had Laurente hurt in the 10th and final round but Laurente took his licks and made it to the final bell with the scores being 100-89 from all 3 judges.

Daquan Arnett edged previously unbeaten Joshua Conley in a razor thin split decision in their super welterweight bout. Scores were 77-75 (twice) for Arnett and 77-75 for Conley.

There were several close rounds that were tough to score, coming down to choosing between Arnett's boxing and Conley's aggression.

In the end two of the judges went with the hometown favorite, as Arnett moves to 14-1, 8KOs. Conley - trained by Henry Ramirez - heads home to San Bernadino, Calif. with his first loss, falling to 11-1-1, 6KOs.

Fabian Maidana rode a 7th round knockdown to the finish line, pitching an eight-round shutout over Peter Olouch. Scores were 80-71 across the board for Maidana, who floored Olouch - a durable journeyman from Pahokee, FL - courtesy of a left hook late in round seven.

Maidana comes from a fighting family in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His older brother Marcos is a former welterweight champ.

Miguel Cruz had little difficulty in preserving his unbeaten record, blowing past Missouri journeyman Travis Hartman.

The bout was all one way in favor of the undefeated local (Lake Mary, FL) welterweight before the fight was stopped at 1:11 of round two.

Bryant "Goodfella" Perrella picked up his seventh straight knockout, stopping Ecuador's Eduardo Flores in two rounds in welterweight action.

Perrella - a rangy southpaw from Ft. Myers - floored Flores late in the opening round and then battering him into submission. Flores took enough punishment to where the ref saw fit to stop the bout at 1:09 of round two.

Javontae Starks endured a tough test in maintaining his unbeaten record, managing a hard-fought eight round decision over Carlos Galvan. Scores were 76-75 Galvan, 76-75 Starks and 77-74 Starks.

The difference in the fight turned out to be a knockdown in the 8th and final round. Starks floored Galvan with a body shot, ultimately producing the split decision win as opposed to having to live with a draw.
