Miguel Berchelt (38-2) made six successful defenses of his WBC super featherweight title before he was stopped by Oscar Valdez last February. He had captured his title in 2017 when he stopped Francisco “Bandido” Vargas.

The 30-year-old Mexican had been training with Alfredo Caballero in Mexico for over 4 years but now has made changes to his team. He has enlisted the services of Jorge Capetillo and will train in Las Vegas.

Capetillo is very excited for the opportunity and expects Berchelt to become a champion again very soon.

“I am very content to have the chance to work with Miguel Berchelt. There are big plans for him. He just signed a new contract with Top Rank and is going to move up to 135,” Capetillo told BoxingScene.com

“He will return to the ring sometime in March. He is going to take his time and get used to this new division and get back in his rhythm. He feels a lot better at this higher weight class.  He will take it step by step and work his way to bigger challenges. We want to become a champion in another division. We know there are a lot of great fighters at 135.”

The plan is for Berchelt to take his time and get accustomed to his new weight class before stepping up his class of opponents.

Berchelt took a short break from training to go home for the holidays but will return to the gym next week to begin his training camp for his next fight.

“We know that Miguel Berchelt is a big name moving into the division and we look forward to the challenges that await. He was training here in Las Vegas in November and December and went home ti spend the holidays with his family. He will return very soon and we will get back to work on becoming a champion once again,” said Capetillo.

Notable victories on Berchelt’s resume include Francisco Vargas twice, Jason Sosa, Takashi Miura and Jonathan Barros.
