Jono Carroll withstood Miguel Marriaga’s power and a significant cut over his left eye to extend his winning streak Saturday night in Dubai.

The Irish southpaw out-pointed the Colombian power puncher on all three scorecards and won their 10-rounder by unanimous decision on the Jarrell Miller-Lucas Browne undercard at The Agenda. Marriaga rocked Carroll with right hands in the second round and was dangerous until the final bell, but judges Andrei Cheveliov (98-92), Mike Hayel (100-90) and Gary Kitanoski (99-91) all scored their fight for Carroll by wide distances.

Carroll (24-2-1, 7 KOs), who is ranked fifth among the WBA’s 130-pound contenders, was at least a 6-1 favorite according to most sportsbooks. The 30-year-old Carroll has won six straight fights since Maxi Hughes upset him by unanimous decision in their 10-rounder in August 2020.

The 36-year-old Marriaga (30-7, 26 KOs) has lost four of his past five fights, all 10-rounders by unanimous decision.

Marriaga pressured Carroll throughout the 10th round and attempted to land the type of shot he needed to score a knockout. Carroll continued to move well in those final three minutes, though, and landed more punches as he stuck and moved toward the final bell.

Carroll boxed well off his back foot again during the ninth round, when he threw punches in combination and often made Marriaga reset his feet as he pursued Carroll.

A left hand by Carroll made Marriaga stumble just before the bell sounded to end the ninth round.

Marriaga came forward throughout the eighth round. His right hand got Carroll’s attention with just over 20 seconds left in it.

Carroll’s right uppercut connected 1:15 into the eighth round.

Carroll turned Marriaga and remained mostly out of his punching range in the seventh round. Marriaga did catch Carroll, however, with a right when there were just over 20 seconds to go in that round.

A straight left by Carroll moved Marriaga backward with just over 30 seconds on the clock in the sixth round. Marriaga’s right rocked Carroll barely a minute into the sixth round.

Carroll connected to Marriaga’s head and body during the final 20 seconds of the fifth round. Marriaga drilled Carroll with a straight right about 1:20 into the fifth round.

Carroll backed Marriaga into the ropes with just over 30 seconds remaining in the fourth round. Marriaga waved Carroll forward because he wanted to exchange with him.

Carroll connected with a right uppercut and then a straight left hand just before the midway mark of the fourth round.

Carroll controlled the action in the third round, when he landed several right hooks both to Marriaga’s head and body.

Carroll’s right hook knocked Marriaga off balance a few seconds before the second round ended.

Marriaga nailed Carroll with three consecutive right hands about a minute into the second round. One of those shots opened a cut around the left eye of Carroll.

Carroll held Marriaga during that sequence to briefly stop Marriaga from throwing punches.

Marriaga landed a right hand from long range with just over 20 seconds to go in the first round. A right hook by Carroll knocked Marriaga into the ropes a little less than a minute into the opening round.
