At the Centennial Sports Center in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Johnny "Vaquero" Navarrete made good on his promise to score an upset victory over Jorge "Maromerito" Paez Jr.

"Vaquero" Navarrete (33-8-1, 16 KOs) vs. "Maromerito" Paez (39-9-2, 23 KOs) headlined a Zanfer Promotions card which took place over the ten round distance at super welterweight.

Navarrette was more solid in the contest and was outboxing Paez, who was very sluggish in the ring, and banked a well earned ten round unanimous decision. The three judges scored it 98-92, 97-94 and 96-94.

The 28-year-old Paez was hoping to close out the year with a big win. He was planning to drop down to the welterweight limit to pursue a world title at that weight.

Before the fight, Paez admitted that his career was in dire need of a victory - "I have to win no matter what it costs. I always give a spectacle, but this time with a victory.

This was Paez's third consecutive defeat - after losing back to back fights to Carlos Ocampo and Antonio Margarito. And it was also his fourth defeat in his last five fights.

Navarrete, who last July in Ciudad Juarez gave a surprise defeat to "Juanito" Montiel, is ending the year with a very bright light in his career.
