NEW YORK – Joe Ward made a triumphant return Tuesday night to the site where he sustained a devastating injury that once derailed his career.

The Irish light heavyweight prospect’s power and accuracy were too much for previously undefeated Tory Williams in their six-round bout on Triller Fight Club’s card at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater. Judges John Basile, Bernard Bruni and John Poturaj each scored all six rounds for Ward, who won by the same score, 60-54, on their cards.

Williams, of Monroe, Louisiana, lost for the first time as a pro (5-1-1, 4 KOs).

Ward (4-1, 2 KOs) won a fourth straight fight since he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in the first round of his pro debut upstairs from Hulu Theater, at Madison Square Garden. That injury prevented Ward from continuing and caused him to lose by first-round technical knockout to Marco Delgado in October 2019.

Ward avenged his loss to Delgado (7-2, 5 KOs) when he won their rematch by unanimous decision March 18 in Salinas, Puerto Rico.

Ward’s jab knocked Williams off balance about 40 seconds into the sixth round. Williams was able to withstand Ward’s power until the final bell, but he clearly lost.

Following a competitive fourth round, Ward landed a four-punch combination to Williams’ head and body just before the halfway point of the fifth round. Ward sustained a cut around his right eye in the final minute of the fifth round.

That cut caused Ward to attack Williams with power shots after a ringside physician determined he could continue.

Ward drilled Williams with a left hand with just over a minute on the clock in the third round. Williams took that shot better than the left hand with which Ward buzzed him in the previous round.

Williams nailed Ward with a right hand late in the third round, but Ward came right back and landed a left that moved Williams into the ropes.

Ward wobbled Williams with a left hand just before the midway mark of the second round. Williams moved away from Ward and held him to survive that trouble.
