Jhonny Gonzalez hopes for some of the same magic blessed upon recently crowned heavyweight titlist Andy Ruiz to come his way—starting with joining his training stable.

The three-time titlist in two weight divisions from Mexico has enlisted the services of Manny Robles ahead of his next fight, which is eyed for late August at a specific date and location to be determined.

"I have resumed the boxing style that I like,”insisted Gonzalez (67-11, 55KOa). “I feel confident of the work we have done and motivated to return to the ring as soon as possible.”

Gonzalez - a former titlist at bantamweight and featherweight joined the renowned cornerman earlier this month, the latest addition to a once-again growing stable after taking a few hits.

Robles saw the likes of heavyweight title challenger Dominic Breazeale and unbeaten reigning featherweight titlist Oscar Valdez both fly the neat within the past year. He found himself back in high-demand following one of the biggest upsets in heavyweight title fight history, when he coached Ruiz (33-1-1, 22KOs) to the crown following a 7th round knockout of Anthony Joshua in June.

After a few weeks with the Norwalk, Calif.-based trainer, Gonzalez understands the immediate and lasting effects he possesses.

“We have been working on the physical part and also post-workout recovery,” notes the 37-year old Gonzalez, who has won nine of his last 10 starts. “Add to that a balanced diet and I am feeling like a brand new fighter.”

Given his advanced ring age, that’s not a bad way at all for Gonzalez to feel. His career seems left for done following a 10-round loss to Jonathan Oquendo in Sept. 2015.

In the fight he looked a long way from the version who reigning at bantamweight and especially at featherweight, which began with a career-best performance in a stunning 1st round knockout of then-unbeaten Abner Mares in 2013.

The hope these days in the twilight of his career remains to add a 130-pound title around his waist.

“I’ve never stopped believing in myself,” points out Gonzalez, who first recognized that change was needed following a shocking loss to Tomas Rojas last year. “With Coach Manny Robles in my corner, I’m feeling unbeatable!”
