On the night of August 24, 2013, Jhonny Gonzalez entered the ring at StubHub in Carson, California, as the challenger to the big favorite Abner Mares, the undefeated featherweight world champion. However, Jhonny shocked the boxing world by knocking out Mares in the first round and has since reestablished himself brilliantly.

Mares returns to the ring on March 7th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas against Arturo Santos. Both fighters are 29-years-old and Mexican Olympians. Santos has a record of 18 wins, 4 losses and five knockouts and turned pro on June 27, 2009. Mares has a record of 28-1-1, 15 knockouts and he's been a pro since 2005.

"I talked to Arturo Santos. I have given him some ideas of how he can fight him Abner. Arturo has been working for several weeks for that contest, and he's seen several videos of [Mares'] fights. He told me that he has seen flaws, weaknesses where can sneak in the victory. He is very motivated, I think he can beat him," Gonzalez said.

Both Santos and Gonzalez are promoted by Oswaldo Kuchle of Mexico.

Santos said.. "I know Mares thoroughly. We were both in the Mexican Olympics, and I expect him to surprise him. I know his routines, his strengths and weaknesses. And this fight is the most important of my career and I'm going to win."
