By Jhonny Gonzalez

The world featherweight champion of the World Council of Boxing (WBC), Mexico's Jhonny González (51-7, 45KOs) is preparing for a very dangerous fight with mandatory Elio Rojas (23-1, 14KOs), scheduled for April 28th in Mexico. Gonzalez remembers when Rojas was the champion and refused to give him a shot. Rojas then suffered an injury, lost the title, and now the roles are reveresed.

“When Elio Rojas was the champion of the world, he was never a busy champion who had [consecutive] fights. At that time we were asking him for the opportunity because we were already in the number one challenger position, but never wanted to give us the opportunity. He was avoiding us. When his injury came, the title became vacant, Hasegawa fought Burgos and won it - and I had the opportunity to go fight [Hasegawa] in Japan, where I won it. Now the roles are reversed. I am the champion and he wants the opportunity, and we are going to give it to him with great pleasure on April 28," Gonzalez said.

Beyond Rojas, Gonzalez would love to unify his title with WBO champion and countryman Orlando Salido (38-11-1, 26KOs).

“We would have to talk with our organizations [to get permission for a unification]. We saw Orlando Salido's level in winning the championship from Juan Manuel López in Puerto Rico. We are both great champions of our respective organizations," Gonzalez said.
