Jesus Ramos is ready to test the junior middleweight waters.

The growing 20-year-old southpaw from Casa Grande, Arizona moves up from welterweight, at least for one night as he faces Brian Mendoza (19-1, 13KOs) in a scheduled ten-round bout just above the junior middleweight limit. Both boxers made weight for their bout, which airs live atop a Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on Fox tripleheader Sunday evening from The Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Ramos weighed 154.4 pounds, while Las Vegas’ Mendoza was 154.6 pounds at Saturday’s official pre-fight weigh-in.

The bout is already the third of the year for Ramos, who is coming off a ten-round, unanimous decision win over Javier Molina in his previous outing this past May at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. The feat marked the deepest fight of his career, also snapping a five-fight knockout streak that included a second-round wipeout of Jesus Emilio Bojorquez this past February live on Fox from Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles.

Mendoza has not fought since a ten-round, split decision win over boxing cult favorite Thomas ‘Cornflake’ Lamanna last August, in a bout that aired on FS1 from Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The 27-year-old Vegas prospect was due to step up in class in a showdown with former unified junior middleweight champion Julian Williams, who suffered an injury and was forced to withdraw from their scheduled Showtime Pay-Per-View undercard clash June 26 in Atlanta.

The evening’s co-feature pits unbeaten Dominican prospect Starling Castillo (15-0, 12KOs) versus Mexico’s Juan Carlos Burgos (34-5-2, 21KOs) in a scheduled 10-round lightweight bout. Santo Domingo’s Castillo was slightly over the limit at 135.4 pounds on his first try before making weight one hour later. Burgos—a former three-time title challenger from Puebla, Mexico—weighed 134.8 pounds.

Castillo was one of three fighters on Sunday’s nine-card lineup to come in over the limit. He was able to return within the prescribed one-hour limit, weighing 135 on the dot to proceed with the fight.

Opening the Fox-televised tripleheader, Jose Armando Resendiz (12-0, 8KOs) and Marcos Hernandez (14-4-2, 3KOs) both made weight for their scheduled ten-round clash above the middleweight limit. Resendiz—a 22-year-old prospect from Nayarit, Mexico—weighed 163.8 pounds, while Fresno’s Hernandez came in right at the contracted limit of 164 pounds.

The show marks the first on Fox since August 7, which also aired live from The Armory and remains infamously remembered for Gabriel Maestre’s highly questionable twelve-round decision win over Mykal Fox in the evening’s chief support which featured the WBA’s now-defunct interim welterweight title at stake. The controversy caused a massive ripple effect in the sport, including the WBA having suspended judge Gloria Martinez-Rizzo—though less for her awful 117-110 card in favor of Maestre and more for her past racist comments and extreme political views.

The WBA has also since removed the interim title from circulation in all weight divisions and continues to order title consolidation clashes and mandatory title fights among its remaining titlists.

Judges David Singh (114-113) and John Mariano (115-112) have yet to receive any form of documented punishment. It is worth noting, however, that Mariano—a locally based judge—is a noticeable omission from Sunday’s lineup, as he is not scheduled to work any of the nine scheduled bouts on Sunday’s card.

Below are the weights for the rest of the undercard bouts.
