There is still no confirmation of a new date so far, for the canceled fight between Jesus Cuellar (28-1, 21KOs) and Abner Mares (29-2-1, 15KOs). There was some discussion of a date in July, at a venue in California, but nothing further has been said with respect to that.

The fight was scheduled to take place on June 25th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The card was headlined by the welterweight war between Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter.

Less than two weeks before the fight was going to happen, it was revealed that Mares was unable to secure a license from the New York State Athletic Commission. According to sources, Mares failed a mandatory eye exam with an inadequate eyesight score.

Cuellar, who holds the WBA 'regular' featherweight title, is itching to get in the ring. Cuellar has been out of the ring since last November, when he traveled to the Barclays Center to win a twelve round decision over Jonathan Oquendo of Puerto Rico. Mares, former three division world champion, was looking to bounce back after losing a twelve round decision to Leo Santa Cruz in his last ring outing.

The match has an interesting twist. Cuellar was trained by Robert Garcia and not that long ago parted ways with the veteran coach. Then Mares parted ways with his trainer and hooked up with Garcia.

Cuellar was being trained by Juan Manuel Ledesma, but says there is a conflict. Because of that conflict Cuellar has gone out and retained the services of Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach.

"The suspension of the fight [with Mares] has made it to where Juan will not be training me. It is understandable, because it took us all by surprise and he has to deal with some personal issues. But I have continue training myself here [with Roach], because at any time we could be informed of the new fight date," said Cuellar to ESPN Deportes.

"So, we decided to choose Freddie Roach as my new trainer. It was somewhat unexpected but we are starting another stage, but with the same objective - to knock Mares out. Roach is one of the best coaches in the world and I am proud to have him on my side."
