In a recent article on this site, Jessie Vargas told BoxingScene.com that he plans on returning to the first in the first quarter of the year.
The two-division champion was last in action on February 29th when he lost a unanimous decision to Mikey Garcia in one of the last fight cards before the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic shut down the sport for most of the spring.
Vargas has kept himself busy as a commentator for the Spanish language broadcasts of DAZN's recently streamed events and was especially impressed with Canelo Alvarez's December 19th dominant unanimous decision victory over Callum Smith.
"It was a great performance. I thought he looked flawless. He is very entertaining to see in action," said Vargas. "I really enjoy commentating as it keeps me busy when I am not fighting but once I begin training for a fight I put in on hold and focus on my training camp."
While a third fight with Gennadiy "GGG" Golovkin is not going to happen next for Canelo since he has to face Avni Yildrim in a mandatory defense, it is very possible that they meet again sometime in 2021. If and when that does happen, Vargas expects Canelo to win clearly but doesn't believe a knockout will happen.
"I definitely would go with Canelo to win in a third fight. At 168 pounds I would lean more to a unanimous decision," Vargas told BoxingScene.com.
Alvarez, who recently broke away from long time promoter Golden Boy, stated that he would like to fight 3 times in 2021 after only having fought once last year. He plans on returning to the ring against Yildrim in February and then fighting on his customary dates in May and September that are centered around the Cinco De Mayo and Mexican Independence Day holidays.
