Like many fighters in 2020, Jessie Vargas was only able to see action one time.

The former two-division champion lost an unanimous decision to Mikey Garcia in late February just before the COVID-19 pandemic brought the sports world to a screeching halt.

Boxing resumed in the United States in June in “bubble” environments without fans in attendance. By the end of the year some states allowed a limited number of fans to attend sporting events but Vargas decided to take the rest of the year off and spend time with his family.

“That is exactly what I did. With the pandemic and lockdown I decided to just sit back and enjoy time with my family,” Vargas told BoxingScene.com.

Prior to the fight against Garcia, Vargas stopped former champion Humberto Soto in six rounds in a bout contested at a 151 pound catchweight in April, 2019.

Afterwards Vargas planned on campaigning as a full fledged super welterweight until the opportunity to fight Garcia came along. He said that his ring return will occur in the 154 pound division.

“I am really looking forward to performing superbly in the 154 pound division.  There are a few names out there that I am interested in and the goal is to become a three-division champion,” Vargas stated.

Vargas said that the plan is for him to return to the ring in the first quarter of 2021 and that an announcement will be made in the near future.

He has also continued his career as analyst and republicans as part of DAZN’s Spanish broadcast team for Ryan Garcia’s knockout victory over Luke Campbell on January 2nd.
