Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez didn’t need a title shot to turn in a championship effort.

The unbeaten junior flyweight continues to shine as a rising contender, the latest exhibit coming in the form of a fourth-round stoppage of Jose Alejandro Burgos. Rodriguez scored two knockdowns, the latter prompting an immediate stoppage ordered by referee Raul Caiz Sr. at 1:23 of round four.

Saturday evening on DAZN from Chukchansi Park in Fresno, California.

Rodriguez spent most of this camp training under the belief he would be fighting for a title. His name was originally attached to a fight with WBA “World” junior flyweight titlist Esteban Bermudez. The fight fell through once the WBA refused to sanction the fight, as Bermudez is still on the hook to work out terms for a title consolidation clash with WBA “Super” junior flyweight titlist Hiroto Kyoguchi.

With that came the select of Burgos, who came to provide rounds for Rodriguez but was little match for his unbeaten opponent’s supreme skillset.

The beating was slow and methodical by Rodriguez, whose older brother Joshua Franco is the WBA “World” junior bantamweight titlist and both who train as part of the all-star stable under renowned head trainer Robert Garcia. The 21-year-old southpaw offered plenty of angles, with Burgos struggling to land a clean shot on the San Antonio native as evident in the final Compubox statistics which had him landing just 37-of-307 total punches (12%), compared to 103-of-218 (47%) for Rodriguez—including 74-of-127 power punches (58%).

The one-sided affair came to an emphatic close in round four. Rodriguez floored Burgos early in the round, remaining poised even as Burgos beat the count and sold Caiz on being able to continue. Rodriguez put an end to that, drilling Burgos with left hands in sending Burgos reeling into the ropes and eventually to the canvas as the fight was immediately brought to a halt.

Rodriguez improves to 14-0 (10KOs) as he has now stopped each of his last six opponents.

The bout served in supporting capacity to the return of former four-division titlist Mikey Garcia (40-1, 30KOs), Rodriguez’s stablemate who faces Spain’s Sandor Martin (38-2, 13KOs) in a scheduled 10-round welterweight contest.
