Time waits for no one. And it certainly didn’t wait for Jermall Charlo.

There was a point in time when it seemed like Charlo was a prominent figure and one of the best fighters in the world. He might still be that, but he has some work to do. After racking up a few notable wins, life hit Charlo right in the jaw. Although he’s known for having one of the best chins in the sport, he was forced to take a standing eight count.

Following his somewhat lopsided win over Juan Macias Montiel in 2021, Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) was sequestered from the rest of the world. First, a nagging back injury pushed him to the sidelines. Once he was ready to return, he took another sabbatical, this time due to personal issues.

Finally, after two and a half years out of the mix, the now 33-year-old will make his return on November 25th, against Jose Benavidez Jr. Charlo hasn't sauntered through an arena in an incredibly long time, and to a large extent, he’s happy to be back. Considering that he’s missed a ton of time, Charlo is hoping that he’ll never go through another lull.

“I wanna be a lot more active next year,” Charlo told BoxingScene.com. “Maybe take on 2-3 fights. Stay in the gym and stay focused.”

Charlo doesn't want to get too ahead of himself. He also doesn’t want his words to be laced with too much hubris. Benavidez Jr. is getting all of his attention but he’ll have at least one eye on the main event. After his showdown against Benavidez Jr., David Benavidez, his younger brother, and Demetrius Andrade, will meet in the center of the ring and bang it out.

If Charlo grabs the victory, he won’t spend too much time in the ring soaking up the moment. Instead, he’ll run to the dressing room, change his clothes then grab a seat ringside. Charlo didn't have an official prediction for their showdown but whoever gets their hand raised is who he wants next.

“Maybe the winner out of the main event.”
