Jean Pascal could be the next boxing figure to pass through the fighter-to-promoter revolving door.

The Haitian-Canadian light heavyweight contender and former champion, one of the top fighters to come out of Montreal in the past two decades, recently suggested he has a desire to promote boxing shows after his fighting career is over.

Pascal, 40, believes he not only has the “experience” to put together entire fight cards but that he has the requisite training, in part thanks to his (on-and-off) longtime promoter Yvon Michel, the Montreal-based promoter, who is Canada’s most well-known boxing impresario.

Pascal will return in the coming months against Germany’s Michael Eifert in an IBF light heavyweight eliminator. The fight was initially scheduled for February 9 in Quebec, but pushed back after Pascal contracted COVID-19. The IBF champion currently is Artur Beterbiev, another Montreal native, who also holds the WBC and WBO titles. Beterbiev is slated to defend his belts against his WBO mandatory Anthony Yarde on Jan. 28 in London.

In a recent interview, Pascal said he was allowed to get involved in some of the matchmaking for the card that was planned for his fight with Eifert. Pascal has not fought in Quebec since 2018, when he kayoed Steve Bosse in eight rounds.

“I believe I have the experience [to promote],” Pascal told Le Journal de Montreal. “I learned a lot from Yvon Michel and he showed me a lot about what goes into promoting. I believe that when he is on the way out the door, I will be there to take over for, if necessary.”

Michel corroborated Pascal’s ambitions.

“He told me ‘I would like to spend some time with you so that you can show me the tricks of the trade,’ Michel told Le Journal de Montreal with a laugh. “I told him to concentrate on his fight.

“Indeed, we could probably work together eventually … he told me ‘I want to be the Black Yvon Michel.' I find that really flattering.”

Pascal, in fact, started his own promotional company, Jean Pascal Promotions, in 2014, soon after splitting from Michel. But the company never gained traction and Pascal quickly signed with Canadian promoter InterBox.

Pascal is having a career resurgence of sorts of late. He is riding a three-fight win streak, including wins over Badou Jack and Marcus Browne, ever since he dropped a wide decision to Dmitry Bivol in a WBA light heavyweight contest.

At the same time, Pascal has come under fire recently for testing positive twice for a slew of banned substances. In May 2021, he tested positive for four different illegal drugs ahead of a scheduled rematch with Jack. A couple of weeks later, in a separate test, he tested positive again for two of the four original substances. Pascal at the time vowed that he was innocent and blamed his strength and conditioning coach, whom he ended up firing.

In November, Pascal was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in downtown Montreal.
