Javier Martinez hit Raul Salomon with every head and body shot imaginable, but Salomon remained on his feet throughout their eight-round super middleweight match Thursday night in Las Vegas.

Martinez, a southpaw from Milwaukee, remained unbeaten by outpointing a game Salomon unanimously on the Teofimo Lopez-Jamaine Ortiz undercard at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino’s Michelob ULTRA Arena. He didn’t have enough power to hurt Salomon, but Martinez convinced judges Max De Luca (79-73), Tim Cheatham (78-74) and Glenn Feldman (78-74) that he clearly won their bout.

The 28-year-old Martinez improved to 10-0-1 (3 KOs). Salomon (12-3, 10 KOs), of Long Beach, California, has not been knocked out as a pro.

It was obvious by the time the eighth and final round began that Martinez and Salomon would go the distance. Neither fighter could hurt his opponent, despite landing flush punches both to the head and body during their somewhat competitive contest.

Martinez’s combination punching won him the seventh round, though Salomon occasionally caught Martinez as well. Referee Celestino Ruiz sternly warned Martinez for low blows late in the seventh round.

Martinez continued to catch Salomon with head and body punches during the sixth round. He couldn’t keep Salomon from coming forward, but Martinez stockpiled points and clearly controlled the action in those three minutes.

Martinez’s left landed to the side of Salomon’s head with just under 1:10 on the clock in the fifth round. A right hook by Martinez knocked Salomon off balance about 55 seconds into the fifth round.

Salomon’s left hook connected with about 15 seconds on the clock in the fourth round. That shot made Martinez unload a combination that prevented Salomon from punching.

Martinez landed a left and then a right to Salomon’s head with just over a minute to go in the fourth round. Martinez’s left-right combination to Salomon’s body landed a little more than a minute into the fourth round.

Martinez stood in front of Salomon and consistently connected to his head and body during the final minute of the third round. Salomon and Martinez traded hard body shots during the first half of the third round.

Martinez hit Salomon to his body several times during the second round and was the more accurate, active fighter during those three minutes. Martinez landed a right to Salomon’s body, but Salomon quickly came back with a right that landed to Martinez’s head a few seconds after the midway mark of the first round.
