Jaron Ennis was as cool as the other side of the pillow as Rashidi Ellis spewed derogatory curse words in his direction during a raged-filled rant.

The 29-year-old welterweight contender is set to share the limelight with Ennis this upcoming weekend on the undercard of Gervonta Davis vs. Hector Luis Garcia on January 7th, at the Capital One Arena in Washington D.C.

During the final presser, Ennis (29-0, 27 KOs) openly wondered why the two are facing lesser foes as opposed to squaring off against one another. Ellis though, quickly snapped back, claiming that while team Ennis did reach out to him to gauge his interest, the final numbers were unappealing from a financial standpoint.

As the two began jawing back and forth, Ellis (24-0, 15 KOs) quickly revealed that he plans on pushing for a fight against Ennis, provided he takes care of business against Roiman Villa. Ennis, on the other hand, is in a unique position.

Following years of explosive knockouts, the 25-year-old will lay claim to the vacant IBF interim title this Saturday night unless Karen Chukhadzhian derails him. Winning said bout, would position the switch-hitting star perfectly for a showdown against current unified champion, Errol Spence Jr.

Although winning a world title protrudes to the top of his boxing wish list, Ennis finds a matchup against Ellis as an intriguing, albeit slightly unnecessary one.

“I feel like it is a step back,” said Ennis to BoxingScene.com. “But if I gotta wait for the champions or these other guys, I’ll definitely take that.”

Ennis, in all likelihood, could remain on the outside looking in. With Spence ostensibly on a collision course with Keith Thurman, the eventual plan for the pound-for-pound star is to move into a matchup against Terence Crawford, the division’s WBO champion.

Incredulous but accepting of the waiting process, Ennis knows good and well that a pecking order remains. In the meanwhile, if kept out of the loop, the up-and-coming star views Ellis as the perfect opponent to keep the rust off.

“Why not stay sharp and fight somebody like that?”
