Jaron “Boots” Ennis has continued to huff and puff in the direction of Errol Spence Jr. The highly ranked contender out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has run roughshod over his competition, resulting in lopsided victories and highlight-reel-worthy knockouts.

Desperate to push Spence into a corner, Ennis (30-0, 27 KOs) seemingly solidified himself as a bonafide contender following his unanimous decision victory over Karen Chukhadzhian this past weekend at the Capital One Arena in Washington D.C. With 12 one-sided rounds in his back pocket, Ennis procured the IBF interim crown, making him the mandatory challenger to Spence’s unified welterweight throne.

While he was ostensibly next up, Spence (28-0, 22 KOs) has pulled a complete 180. At some point in April, the 32-year-old will reportedly move up in weight to take on former unified champion, Keith Thurman. Although Spence hasn’t officially given up his WBA, WBC, and IBF trinkets, Ennis has a hard time believing that the extremely stout southpaw will ever make his way back down in weight.

“I feel like if he’s fighting Keith Thurman at 54, he’s not gonna come back down,” said Ennis to YSM Sports Media. “I feel like he’s getting older now and I guess he’s gonna move up.”

Spence, a former U.S. Olympian, has complained over the years that making the 147-pound welterweight limit was becoming more and more arduous. All along, Spence was hopeful that his time in the only division that he’s ever known could be protracted long enough to settle a longstanding debate.

Terence Crawford, the division’s WBO titlist, was seemingly set to take on Spence for all of the welterweight marbles on November 19th. Fans, of course, were apoplectic, when negotiations fell apart in the 11th hour, leading to Crawford taking on David Avanesyan on December 10th.

Ultimately, Spence could choose to revisit an undisputed showdown against Crawford. However, in a moment of pure candor, Ennis revealed that Spence’s days at 147 pounds are likely over.

“I doubt if he’s fighting at 54, he’s gonna come all the way back down to fight me or Bud. I feel like he’s gonna stay at 54.”
