Isaac "Canelito" Avelar (17-2) is just days away from the biggest fight of his career.  On Saturday, May 1st he takes on Eduardo "Zurdito" Ramirez (24-2-3) at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.  The vacant WBA interim featherweight title will be at stake.

The fight takes place on FOX as the co-feature bout underneath the Erislandy Lara-Thomas "Cornflake" LaManna main event. Later on in the evening, Andy Ruiz will battle Chris Arreola in a FOX pay-per-view main event.

Avelar began his training camp in Mexico and finished up at the DLX Boxing Gym which has become one of the premier gyms in Las Vegas for upper echelon boxers.

"I feel good.  I had a great training camp and great sparring. I am ready to go to California and win my first title. I don't like to say too much. I like to do my talking with my fists. Ramirez is a good fighter but on May 1st I will show I am better," Avelar told BoxingScene.com.

The 23-year-old Aguascalientes, Mexico native bounced back from a 2019 loss to future champion Stephon Fulton by beating the previous unbeaten Sakaria Lukas (25-1) in December.

He is now trained by former multi-division champion Joel Casamayor. He said that he learned a lot from the Fulton fight and that he is a better boxer now because of that experience.

"I learned a lot.  That wasn't my night but I have more experience now and that loss has motivated me even more to improve. I have also learned a lot from Casamayor.  He was a great fighter and now is one of the best trainers," said Avelar.
